State Will Recognize 300 Same-Sex Marriages

Governor Rick Snyder says the state will recognize 300 gay and lesbian marriages that were performed in Michigan last March. Snyder says his administration will not challenge a judge’s order issued last month to recognize the marriages.

Glenna DeJonge and her partner Marsha Caspar were the first same-sex couple married after a judge struck down Michigan’s marriage ban.

“I’m glad that the state has finally backed down and decided not to appeal. There are real people and real faces behind this and it shows a little bit of compassion at some point here,” she says.

Michigan is still one of four states defending same-sex marriage bans in a case to be heard later this year by the US Supreme Court.
