Twain-Inspired Work Gets Michigan Premiere At Saugatuck Fest

The married musicians Martha Walvoord, a violinist, and Jack Unzicker, a double-bassist, have made it their mission to create a new repertoire of violin-bass duets. This week at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck, they'll share their newest commission with audiences on Thursday and Friday night.

Written by well-known University of Michigan composer Michael Daugherty, The Diary Of Adam And Eve is directly inspired by a series of Mark Twain short stories. In Daugherty's music, Adam and Eve are voiced in the bass and violin as well as by two narrators. For this concert, the festival's married co-directors, Drew Le and Jennifer Walvoord, will narrate.

Bassist Jack Unzicker describes the new piece and previews the additional works on the program, Prokofiev's Quartet in G minor, Op 39, and Saint-Saens' Septet, Op 65.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
