Congressman Fred Upton discusses the Allied Paper Landfill site

West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton favors a complete removal of PCB contamination from the Allied Paper landfill site.

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering a range of options, including "capping and monitoring" the site. Upton says the encouraging news is that the latest cost estimates have come down for all options, including total removal.

Upton says the landfill is close to the Kalamazoo River in a "pretty urbanized area." He says the contamination should not just be left in that setting. Upton says there has been collaboration amongst local officials at all levels and from different political parties.

Upton says he will continue working with Michigan's two U.S. Senators Democrats Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow on total cleanup of the landfill site.

WMUK's Gordon Evans and Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Yvonne Zipp interviewed Upton for this week's WestSouthwest. That can be heard on Wednesday morning at 9:20 on WMUK.

Upton also participated in a live chat with the Gazette and its readers on Monday.
