Vogue Writer Comes To Kalamazoo, Shops Winter Apparel

You wouldn’t expect to see Carhartt jackets and overalls at a fashion show, but writer for Vogue.com Liana Satenstein says it’s not so far-fetched.

Satenstein says after the harsh winter last year, even fashion gurus are looking for sturdy winter coats. A few weeks ago, Satenstein wrote an article about her shopping trip in Kalamazoo. She says she needed something warmer while visiting her boyfriend’s family in Battle Creek.

"I came there in, you know, a very thin knit," says Satenstein. "And what happened was I just wanted something warm and you know I would think hunters are outside all day in the bushes, in the woods. And I decided to take a tip from them and find the jacket for myself."

Satenstein ended up buying a camo jacket at Gander Mountain, an outdoor outfitters in Kalamazoo. Satenstein says though not many people in New York are wearing hunting gear, there is a shift toward more industrial-strength outerwear.

"It's been getting extremely cold over the past few years. You know, we had a polar vortex last year which I think threw everyone for a loop. And so you want something that doesn't just look good, but you want something that is actually going to provide you warmth," says Satenstein.

"And so taking these qualities from clothing that people wear for their job or their lifestyle where it's really cold, I mean you want to apply that to your daily look and lifestyle as well."

Satenstein says this trend toward functionality has prompted a few people to see work wear in a different light - like Instagram's @MisterMort.

"He'll take a photograph of you know maybe a construction worker or someone who wears these heavy duty pieces of clothing and he finds the beauty in the uniform," Satenstein explains.
