On WestSouthwest, a Kalamazoo woman shares her story of protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. And Bridge looks at the initial signs of success in boosting reading scores in some West Michigan school districts.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has denied a permit for construction on part of a pipeline in North Dakota. Monica Padula Washington was among those who joined the protest at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. She tells us how the pipeline fits in other issues important to Native Americans.
