On WestSouthwest, a look back at Martin Luther King Junior's visit to Western Michigan University in 1963 and how President Obama's proposal for free community college compares to the Kalamazoo Promise. 

  

Retired Western Michigan University Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Coyne spoke with WMUK's Earlene McMichael in 2013 about how King's visit to WMU came to be, and Coyne's memories from that night. 

President Obama has proposed making community college free for many students. Upjohn Institute Researcher Michelle Miller Adams says the proposal has many similarities to the Kalamazoo Promise. Miller-Adams, who is also a Professor of Political Science at Grand Valley State University, discusses the variation in structure and the results from "place-based" scholarship programs. 

Gordon Evans became WMUK's Content Director in 2019 after more than 20 years as an anchor, host and reporter. A 1990 graduate of Michigan State, he began work at WMUK in 1996.
