Temple B'nai Israel

On WestSouthwest, we examine the laws surrounding mental capacity in the criminal justice system.   And Kalamazoo's Temple B'nai Israel celebrates it's 150th anniversary.

Jason Dalton has been found competent to stand trial on charges of killing six people and wounding two others in a February shooting spree in Kalamazoo. But he could still enter an insanity plea. Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School Professor Tonya Krause-Phelan explains how the insanity defense works, and why it's rare for juries to return a verdict of "not guilty by reason of insanity."

Temple B'nai Israel is celebrating its 150th anniversary with events this month. Members Raye Ziring and Jacob Weintraub discuss the origins in Kalamazoo, the temple's history and important milestones along the way.
