Michigan is one of only 10 states in the nation with a full time legislature. Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley has launched a petition drive to make the state House and Senate part-time. Gongwer News Service Editor Zach Gorchow says Michigan would be unique if it adopts a part-time legislature and keeps the state's current strict term limits.
Battle Creek Enquirer Reporter Jennifer Bowman looked into the history of Battle Creek's first female City Commissioner. She found Clare Briggs won election in 1925, and served one term. It would be nearly 50 years before Battle Creek would elect another woman to the city commission. Bowman calls Briggs' election "no small feat."
