On WestSouthwest, a former long-time station manager joins us to look back at some of WMUK's 65 years. And MiBiz Reporter Nick Manes updates us on efforts to take advantage of high speed trains, and to limit favorable property tax appeals for retailers.
WMUK is celebrating our 65th anniversary this month. On May 18th an event at Bell's will include Mark Sahlgren and Darcy Wilkin, The Red Sea Pedestrians and Wellspring, Cori Terry and Dancers. Former WMUK General Manager Garrard Macleod helps us look back at part of that history. He began working for what was then WMCR as a student in the 1950's. Macelod started as a full-time employee in 1959, and served as Station Manager from 1969 until his retirement in 1999.
Economic development officials in Grand Rapids have expressed interest in re-routing north-south trains so they take passengers to Kalamazoo. MiBiz Staff Writer Nick Manes says the idea is in the early stages. But he says they're hoping to capitalize on planned high speed rail between Kalamazoo and Chicago. Manes also updates us on legislation to limit the "dark store" appeal used by retailers to get lower assessments from the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
