Kalamazoo Gazette – 1918

On WestSouthwest, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer tells us that Michiganders need "someone in their corner." And the impact of the 1918 flu pandemic in Kalamazoo.

Gretchen Whitmer spent 14 years in the Michigan Legislature, now she's running for the Democratic nomination for governor. Last week Whitmer was in Southwest Michigan, and spoke with WMUK's Gordon Evans.

Kalamazoo, like many cities, was trying to stop the spread of the flu during the pandemic of 1918. City of Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Coordinator Sharon Ferraro will discuss the flu's impact in Kalamazoo on Sunday at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Ferraro spoke with Sehvilla Mann about how the city did "pretty good" in limiting deaths due to the flu.

Gordon Evans became WMUK's Content Director in 2019 after more than 20 years as an anchor, host and reporter. A 1990 graduate of Michigan State, he began work at WMUK in 1996.
