Kellogg Community College says it's settled a lawsuit over freedom of speech. Three non-students sued in federal court after they were arrested for trespassing at the school in Battle Creek in 2016. They were trying to recruit students for the conservative group Young Americans for Liberty but had not asked for permission. The college says it isn't admitting liability or agreeing with the group's position. But it will pay a financial settlement and make changes in its solicitation policy.

A Kalamazoo private security firm is once again registered with the state. WLP Executive Security Group had failed to renew its license with the state when it expired last summer. The company had been providing pro bono security for Kalamazoo County Commission Chairwoman Stephanie Moore, who she said she felt unsafe after encounters with some people attending commission meetings. WLP’s co-owner told the Kalamazoo Gazette in an e-mail that they didn’t realize the license with the state was expired until a citizen filed a police report January ninth.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say a Kalamazoo doctor came to their attention because of 18 encounters with local law enforcement. Many of those were traffic violations. The Kalamazoo Gazettesays Lukasz Niec plead guilty in 2008 to operating impaired by liquor. The conviction was set aside after he completed probation. Niec also was charged with domestic violence in 2013, but was found not guilty by a jury trail. Niec, who came to the United States from Poland in 1979, is a doctor at Bronson Methodist Hospital. He is subject to removal from the country because of two misdemeanor convictions from 1992. Niec was arrested last week by ICE agents. Bronson is advocating for him to be released from jail, and allowed to stay in the United States.

Michigan State University has come under NCAA investigation for its handling of the sexual abuse scandal involving former sports doctor Larry Nassar. A university spokesman confirmed to the Detroit Free Pressthat the school had received a letter of inquiry regarding potential NCAA rules violations. Meanwhile the Lansing State Journalreports that Michigan State faculty have started the process that could result in holding a vote of no confidence in the school’s president Lou Anna Simon. One member of MSU’s board of trustees and several lawmakers have called for Simon to step down.

In men’s basketball, Western Michigan’s Thomas Wilder scored 40 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Broncos lost to Toledo 85-81Tuesday night. Western is now 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos host Northern Illinois on Saturday.
