WMU Extends Cole-Gilmore Property Agreement

Jul 23, 2014

Western Michigan University will have an extra year to decide what to do with its portion of the land once owned by the Cole-Gilmore car dealership in downtown Kalamazoo.

On Wednesday, WMU’s trustees approved an extension to an agreement with Downtown Tomorrow Incorporated. The university bought a share of the property 13 years ago. It says it has no plan for how to develop the land. It would like to reserve the parcels for  "future development or for University purposes, as may be decided at a later date," according to the trustees' agenda packet for the meeting.

Western trustee Ken Miller is DTI's chairperson. He abstained from the vote.

WMU is in talks with DTI to buy most of the rest of the land in the four-block area, which DTI still owns.
