WMU President John Dunn discusses East campus, security and more

WMUK

Western Michigan University President John Dunn sat down on Tuesday with WMUK’s Gordon Evans and Mlive/Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Ursula Zerilli to discuss a wide range of issues.

Some highlights:

East Campus
Dunn says he believes the public’s reaction to his decision to preserve East Hall and demolish other buildings on East Campus is mixed, but he believes it is more positive than negative. Dunn says he isn’t planning to leave the university any time soon, but says he doesn’t want to leave the East Campus question unanswered for the next president.
The plan calls for converting East Hall into an alumni center. Dunn says that will honor the legacy of the university. And he says hopefully parents and prospective students can visit while they are still considering whether to attend the university. Dunn says the university is reaching a critical stage for saving East Hall. He says they would not just sit and watch all of the buildings fall apart.

New Football Coach
Western Michigan University is introducing P.J. Fleck as the school’s new head football coach on Tuesday. Dunn says he’s excited by the hire. Fleck will be the youngest head coach in major college football. But Dunn says Fleck is wise beyond his years, and will excite students and the community.

Security
Dunn says Western Michigan University holds regular simulations to prepare for emergencies on campus. He says that includes a possible campus shooting and weather emergencies. Dunn says the recent school shooting in Connecticut is another reminder of the need to be prepared. Dunn says the university is always considering its response and how it can be improved.
