WMU President John Dunn Gets a Raise

(This story as been updated)

Western Michigan University President Dunn is getting a raise. University trustees approved the pay increase during a special meeting on Friday, December 18. Dunn will get a two-percent increase in line with raises for non-union Western employees during the current fiscal year. That brings his annual salary to $398,240.

Dunn says he’ll donate $53,240 dollars back to the university to support student scholarships. Since he became Western’s president in 2007, Dunn has returned everything above his original salary of $345,000 each year.

The vote approving Dunn’s latest raise was not unanimous. Trustee Mary Asmonga-Knapp voted against it. Trustee Ronald Hall did not participate in the teleconference.

WMU Board Chairman James Hettinger says even with the increase, Dunn is only the seventh-highest paid among Michigan’s 15 public university presidents. He says Dunn is still paid less than the presidents of all but one of  Michigan's five public research universities, as designated by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. (Note: an earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Dunn was paid less than the presidents of "smaller" schools like Grand Valley State University and Central Michigan University. Both GVSU and CMU have larger total student enrollments than WMU.)
