The Portage Senior Center launched speed dating last summer for people 50 and older. It got the idea from a documentary about older adults who reduced their loneliness that way. Now the center brings the director of the "The Age of Love" film, Steven Loring, to the Kalamazoo area on Monday, March 5 for a free screeningof his movie. (Click icon to listen now to an interview with Loring airing Monday on WMUK 102.1 FM at 9:30 a.m. on WestSouthwest, with a 3:30 p.m. rebroadcast).

The interview with the film-maker is a followup to our feature story when the Portage Senior Center held its first speed-dating event in July 2017. Officials say several couplings have emerged as a result of the initiative, so speed dating will be done regularly. A 2011 survey of 350 seniors living in Kalamazoo County showed 29 percent felt lonely or isolated. (Listen now to a shorter version of our original story here, and a longer version here.)

"The Age of Love" will be shown at6 p.m. on Monday, March 5 at Celebration Cinema in Portage. Loring will take questions from the audience after the screening. Admission is free, but advance registration is required. Go online to Eventbrite. This is the second showing of the 2014 documentary by the Portage Senior Center; the first was last year before starting its speed-dating program.
