WSW: Flood Clean Up Continues, More Help Available

Even though flood waters have receded in Kalamazoo, many home owners are still cleaning up. Habitat for Humanity is offering help.

Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity is working with the city of Kalamazoo, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Community Homeworks, and the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region.

Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity Director of Development Monica Priest says Habitat for Humanity volunteers will pump water out of a home’s basement, and install a sump pump to prevent future flooding. She says after clean up they can apply through home repairs program for an assessment, and possibly further clean up. Priest says there are no eligibility requirements for flood relief. She says people calling Gryphon Place at 211 will be directed to someone who can help with flooding.

Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity Director of Community Relations Tim Smolenksi says there are many homes with at least an inch, and up to a foot of standing water in their basement. Priest says no one will be turned away.

“We will continue to pump out basements until we don’t have any more basements to pump out.”

But Priest says long-term recovery for some homes will be at least a couple of years.
