WSW: A Veteran of World War II Recalls His Service

On Memorial Day we listen back to an interview with 93-year-old Carl Bussema, who was born in Kalamazoo in 1924 and drafted during World War II, not long after he graduated from high school.

Bussema served in Europe in 1944 and 1945 and was posted for some time to the Netherlands, his parents' homeland. Bussema tells WestSouthwest about his time overseas; the celery and vegetable farms where he spent "every summer" of his youth; the strong religious beliefs that guided his upbringing and his stint in a paper mill.

A slightly shorter version of this interview aired in April. See a slideshow with pictures of Bussema in uniform and read a transcript of the original interview.

Sehvilla Mann joined WMUK’s news team in 2014 as a reporter on the local government and education beats. She covered those topics and more in eight years of reporting for the Station, before becoming news director in 2022.
