Berrien, Barry Counties Receive Funds for Habitats

Aquatic wildlife projects in Barry and Berrien Counties are getting a boost from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR has awarded $200,000 to the City of Niles to remove a dam at Pucker Street on the Dowagiac River. It will also give just under $100,000 to the Barry Conservation District for creek habitat restoration.

The DNR says it received 58 applications for a total of a million dollars for aquatic habitat projects; it’s ended up splitting the money between eight of them.

FBI Raids Barry County Sheriff's Office

FBI spokesman and U.S. Attorney in Grand Rapids would not comment on nature of the investigation
HASTINGS - Federal authorities have executed a search warrant at the office of the Barry County Sheriff Department. David Porter, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Detroit, confirmed that FBI agents assisted the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General in the execution of search warrant on Wednesday.

Judge dismisses anti-fracking lawsuit

An environmental group filed suit challenging oil and gas leases in areas of Barry County that were auctioned off by the state, but the judge ruled that the action was premature.
HASTINGS, MI - A Barry County Circuit Court judge has ruled against a nonprofit group that was seeking to have oil and gas leases set aside in Southwest Michigan state game reserves.

Barry County approves plan to kill entire mute swan population

Birds have been deemed a nuisance, harmful to native species and the environment
BARRY COUNTY, MI - State wildlife officials will soon begin killing off Barry County's mute swan population after county leaders approved a five-year elimination plan. The Barry County Board of Commissioners voted recently to give state authorities unprecedented power to cull the swan, considered an invasive and dangerous species.

BARRY COUNTY, MI - The end of a two-decade journey traveled by Marge Brown came Sunday afternoon along M-37 at the Barry County border with Calhoun County. On her 76th birthday, the Oregon, Ohio, resident walked about 100 feet along the shoulder of the two-lane highway and raised her hands in celebration as she left Calhoun County and stepped foot in Barry County.
