Berrien, Barry Counties Receive Funds for Habitats

Aquatic wildlife projects in Barry and Berrien Counties are getting a boost from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR has awarded $200,000 to the City of Niles to remove a dam at Pucker Street on the Dowagiac River. It will also give just under $100,000 to the Barry Conservation District for creek habitat restoration.

The DNR says it received 58 applications for a total of a million dollars for aquatic habitat projects; it’s ended up splitting the money between eight of them.

Less money, but more demand for Dial-A-Ride in Berrien County

As demand increases, federal funding is decreasing and services are being cut for the Twin Cities Transit Authority (TCATA), better known as Dial-A-Ride. Bill Purvis, Dial-A-Ride's executive director, said there has been a 27 percent increase in the number of rides given by the authority since 2010 - from 172,660 to 219,167 rides.
