Michigan bicyclists get new right turn signal

State officials say the old approved hand signal was outdated and confusing to motorists.
LANSING - Michigan bicyclists are getting another way to signal a right turn. Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed legislation giving bicyclists the option of signaling a right turn by extending their right arm horizontally. Until now, they could signal a right turn with an L position by extending their left arm upward.

Bike rentals offered in downtown Battle Creek

The Battle Creek Community Foundation and bike shop TeamActive are sponsoring the project.
Starting next week, Battle Creek will offer bicycle rentals to anybody. All that's needed is a credit card and a working pair of legs. In front of Burnham Brook Community Center at 200 W. Michigan Ave. is a B-cycle station. Four bikes and one adult-sized tricycle can be rented by anyone in the community.

Going coast-to-coast by bicycle

Fifty-nine-year old Mel Church of Kalamazoo has averaged 55 miles-a-day bicycling coast to coast this summer. He began June 4th on the Pacific coast and reached Colorado on Tuesday, July 16th. Except for the ‘friends’ he meets along the way, he is on his own. From Lander, Wyoming, he phoned in to report on his trip so far.

Getting bikes and cars to co-exist

When bikes and cars mix on the road it can be a tense situation for everyone. Helping two- and four-wheeled traffic co-exist is a major theme of the second annual Kalamazoo Bike Week. It starts Thursday, May 9th, with a “Community Forum on Cycling”. Bike Week Co-Chairman David Warwick says he hopes it attracts motorists as well as bicyclists. The forum starts at 6 p.m. in the Lawrence Education Center at Borgess Medical Center, 1521 Gull Road, in Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo TOAD rides on two wheels

If you live in Kalamazoo there’s a TOAD in your backyard but it’s no amphibian. It's the TOAD Bicycle Cooperative in the Vine neighborhood where rusty chains and broken frames are dragged in and functional bikes glide out.

Sean Cleary helped start TOAD three years ago. He says, “It’s fifty percent working on bikes and helping people get on the road, and fifty percent doing big rides and having fun, and just having a party on wheels.”
