Harbor towns anxious to begin dredging

Michigan lawmakers push federal government for aid to Great Lakes

Washington - A trio of Michigan lawmakers introduced federal legislation Thursday aimed at securing long-awaited funding for Great Lakes dredging and harbor maintenance projects. U.S. Reps. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township; Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls; and Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, partnered on the Great Lakes Navigation System Sustainability Act designed to treat the Great Lakes as one unit for budgeting purposes to ensure their harbors receive adequate funding.

Spring rains delay dredging projects

The deluge of rain last month didn't just flood local roads, homes and basements, it also messed up the dredging schedule for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Grand Haven. "They've tried to get here all spring," Corps of Engineers Area Engineer Tom O'Bryan said. "We're very glad they're finally on board."

Record rainfall means increase in Lake Michigan water levels, but how much is unknown

The record-setting rainfall is making its way into Lake Michigan and will give a bump to the water levels this spring - there's no doubt about that. Whether it has a long-term effect on the low levels or is just a drop in the Great Lakes bucket, that is still clear as mud.
