ISAAC "Porch Patrol" surveys Kalamazoo

ISAAC, the Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy and Action in the Community, is sending people to several neighborhoods in Kalamazoo and Portage to find out what issues are on the minds of residents. This is the organization’s second “Porch Patrol”. The first was in 2011.

ISAAC Director Brendan Flanagan says the “Porch Patrol” helps set the organization’s agenda. Two years ago the group heard that gang and gun violence as well as drug-related crime topped the list of concerns in the less well-to-do areas of Kalamazoo.

March, rallies against violence planned in Battle Creek

A march and two rallies against gun violence are scheduled next week in Battle Creek. Bobby Holley, a community activist, will lead the event in the Washington Heights neighborhood on Wednesday but is encouraging community participation. A rally will be held at noon Wednesday at Claude Evans Park, North Washington Avenue at Parkway Drive.

Dowagiac boy dies after gun incident near a school

The Dowagiac Schools closed all of its buildings for the day Monday after the incident near the district's middle school.
DOWAGIAC, MI -- A Dowagiac teen who shot himself in a woods near Dowagiac Middle School Monday morning has died. Dowagiac Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson identified the boy as 13-year-old Darren James Price at a news conference Monday afternoon. A school custodian spotted Price with a handgun on school grounds about 6:40 a.m., Atkinson said.
