Federal department rejects complaint against Michigan schools with Native-American mascots

Michigan Civil Rights Commission had called for end of Native-American imagery with high school mascots
LANSING, MICH. - A federal agency has dismissed a complaint seeking to ban the use of American Indian mascots in Michigan's K-12 schools. In February, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights cited 35 Michigan school districts for discrimination, saying their mascots reinforce stereotypes and hurt American Indian students' self-esteem and learning.

Pokagon Tribe, schools consider use of nicknames, mascots

State Department of Civil Rights has filed a complaint with federal Education Department asking for a ban on Indian nicknames and imagery.
DOWAGIAC - Consensus may be elusive among Pokagon Band Potawatomi when it comes to what they think about schools using Indian nicknames and mascots, a tribal spokeswoman said.

Saugatuck High School doesn't plan to change nickname despite complaint

The state Department of Civil rights has filed a complaint with the federal government over schools using American Indian names and mascots.
