Michigan tribe allows same-sex couple to marry

The marriage of Odawa tribesman Tim LaCroix to his spouse Gene Barfield on Friday marked the first legal same-sex marriage in Michigan. As Interlochen Public Radio reports the Odawa tribe is one of only three tribes to legalize gay marriage in the country.

State democrats push for boost in low-income tax credit

Michigan governor Rick Snyder says a tax credit for low income residents is redundant. According to Interlochen Public Radio, state democrats want to revitalize the Earned Income Tax Credit, which has faced significant budget cuts in the past few years. But Snyder says residents with low wages already receive the credit.

State senator behind legislation to ban nature reserves

Hearings to ban “biodiversity areas” in the state capitol will continue this week. Interlochen Public Radio reports that supporters of the legislation want to allow businesses to access public lands that serve as reserves for native plants and animals. Republican state Senator Tom Casperson says this would help create jobs and business opportunities.

State legislation would require additional insurance for abortions

A Republican state senator is sponsoring legislation that would only let health insurance companies pay for abortions if the individual purchases added coverage in advance.
The measure was included in legislation last year that sought to overhaul Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder vetoed that bill because he thought the abortion language went too far. He said it's not the state's job to decide what kinds of plans insurance companies can offer.
