KALAMAZOO, MI -- Shirley Van Hoeven, 79, retired professor of communication at Western Michigan University and a well-known figure in Kalamazoo social-justice circles, died Monday night, three days after she and her husband were in a car struck by wrong-way driver. Leroy Ronald Ray, Jr., 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 in Kalamazoo. He was born Oct. 17, 1930 to Leroy Sr. and Tommie Lee Ray in Temple, TX, and attended segregated public schools in Temple, graduating from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School.
