KALAMAZOO, MI - Eleven parcels near Western Michigan University will be demolished to make way for a planned four-story retail and apartment building after the Kalamazoo City Commission voted unanimously to approve the project at a public hearing Monday. No comments were made regarding the project by the public or commissioners during the hearing.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Kalamazoo City Commission will take up recommended regulations on digital billboards in the city likely at its August meetings after planning commissioners voted 6-1 to recommend the changes Thursday. Planning commissioners heard from 17 community members -- most of them opposed to allowing digital billboards in Kalamazoo -- and debated for more than an hour during the three-hour meeting.

As proposed, the draft ordinance would not alter the citywide cap of 99 total billboards, but it suggests that a maximum of eight digital billboards be allowed in the city. As proposed, digital billboards would only be allowed in districts zoned general or light manufacturing, community commercial or downtown in the central business district along state-or federally controlled roads.

Planning Commission approves rezoning for new office and apartment building near WMU campus

The Kalamazoo Planning Commission on Thursday recommended that city commissioners approve a rezoning request from Main Street Properties V LLC so the company can demolish the West Michigan Avenue buildings that house Breakfast at Tiffiny's, Chop Shop barbershop and tattoo parlor and a former beauty salon, along with seven single-family houses.

Main Street Properties V LLC is seeking rezoning of the parcels at 2707, 2715, 2725 and 2729 W. Michigan Ave., 1035 and 1103 Euclid Ave., and 1027, 1030, 1102 and 1108 Lafayette Ave., from a commercial, neighborhood district and a residential, multi-dwelling district - campus area to a commercial, community district.
