3rd Graders scoring low on reading could be held back

If a state House bill passes, third graders who score low on the reading portion of the MEAP would have to repeat the third grade.
If the bill were in place this year, it would mean as many as 36,662 children would have to repeat the third-grade because they scored at the bottom two levels of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exam in fall 2012. If it passes the Legislature, the mandate would take effect for the 2014-15 school year.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Eighteen of 20 Kalamazoo elementary and middle schools increased the percent of students rated proficient in math, while 17 buildings improved their reading results, based on a detailed analysis of results on the 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A majority of Kalamazoo-area school districts showed gains in reading and math in all grades on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exams, according to results released today by the Michigan Department of Education. The local results mirrored statewide trends for the tests, which were administered in October 2012.
