Staff Sargent Mark Schoonhoven of Plainwell laid to rest

AUGUSTA, MI - For six weeks, Deb Schoonhoven and Tammie Loffer kept vigil in a Texas hospital. They waited and hoped that Mark Schoonhoven, a U.S. Army staff sergeant, son and father, would fight like he always did and pull through the coma.

OTSEGO, MI - Medals for honor, valor and sacrifice. The Bronze Star. The Army Commendation Medal. Gold Star lapel pins. All of these were presented Wednesday afternoon to the family of Mark Schoonhoven, the Plainwell native and U.S. Army sergeant who died from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
