KALAMAZOO, MI -- Merlin Shaver busted out laughing when he saw the "Welcome Home Mutt" sign his family was holding, paying homage to a childhood nickname, as he paraded through the sea of people welcoming him home Saturday. "I never would've dreamed that anything like this could happen," Shaver said.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Twenty-four WWII veterans from Kalamazoo and Battle Creek are finally getting the homecoming they never had. "These WWII veterans, they went off to the war and they didn't know if they were going to come back alive," said Dan Moyle, vice president of Talons Out Honor Flight.

According to Baillargeon, some veterans are not committing crimes due to simple criminality but because of problems resulting from their military service, such as post traumatic stress syndrome and substance abuse. "We'll try to grab ahold of some of these nonviolent felony and misdemeanor cases and try to put them in a program that will really follow them," Baillargeon said.
