Bullying kids with disabilities in school violates ADA

LANSING -- Federal education officials issued a letter Tuesday clarifying the responsibility of schools to prevent bullying of students with disabilities, saying that attacks could violate the federal guarantee of a free appropriate public education if they interfere with educational benefits.

Detroit, Grand Rapids get funds to tear down abandoned buildings

Five Michigan cities in all are going to split $100 million of federal money to get rid of blight.
DETROIT, MI - Detroit will get the lion's share of $100 million in federal funds to remove blight in Michigan cities. Gov. Rick Snyder announced Tuesday morning Detroit will receive $52.3 million in federal money to fight blight. Four other Michigan cities will split $37.4 million to pay for projects to preserve property values and fight crime.

Smoking OK on some public patios, rooftops

LANSING - Patrons of Michigan bars and restaurants can smoke on outdoor patios and rooftops as long as no food or beverages are served, according to a new interpretation of the law. Michigan Department of Agriculture Director Jamie Clover Adams on Monday announced her decision, which is effective immediately.

"Quiet cars" now available between Kalamazoo and Chicago

LANSING - Train passengers who want some peace and quiet will find respite on Amtrak's specially designated rail cars. Starting Monday, the passenger rail service will designate a "quiet car" on each of its trains on the Wolverine line that travels through Pontiac, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Kalamazoo and several other cities on its way to Chicago.
