Steelcase Closing North Carolina Plant

Grand Rapids-based office furniture company expects move will save $5-million year when fully implemented
Steelcase Inc. plans to close a production plant in High Point, N.C. within two years and consolidate the work elsewhere. Part of an "ongoing strategy to improve the competitiveness and overall fitness of its business model," the move will cost the Grand Rapids-based Steelcase an estimated $8 million over three fiscal years, split evenly between workforce reductions, production moves and manufacturing consolidations, according to a filing with federal securities regulators.

Forecast shows promise for office furniture industry

New outlook has lower expectations for 2014
An updated office furniture industry outlook shows business picking up. The quarterly outlook from the Business and Institutional Manufacturers Association in Grand Rapids now projects North American shipments to grow 4.1 percent in 2013 to $9.6 billion. That's an upgrade from the previous quarterly outlook issued in June that forecast shipment growth of 2.1 percent for the year.

Herman Miller buys New York based firm
