State officials report good year for camping

While many have put their tents away and others are thinking about storing their RV's for the winter still others are taking advantage of Michigan's fall camping season. State officials say 2013 has been a good year for camping. State forest campground use was up from last year, and state park campers made a very strong showing.

New Portage park and nature preserve opens

The property was donated to the city by the family of the late David Eliason, the former president of Eliason Corporation.
PORTAGE, MI - Portage's newest park officially opened Tuesday, being called by Portage officials a 123-acre gift, natural treasure and realization of a vision. City officials, Portage City Council members, boards and commission volunteers and the others dedicated the Eliason Nature Reserve in a brief ceremony, and then turned it over for public use.
