Census data shows more Calhoun County homes getting food stamps

More and more people in the Battle Creek area are receiving federal assistance in getting food, according to data released Thursday by the United States Census Bureau. About 19 percent of households in Battle Creek were receiving federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits - also known as food stamps - in 2012.

In 2012, nearly 67,000 people in Kalamazoo County needed “food stamps” to get by. A week-long program called the “SNAP Challenge” is underway to draw public attention to the service known in Michigan as the “Bridge card”.
