Michigan unemployment rate drops to lowest point since 2008

LANSING, MI -- Michigan's unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent in January, down from 8.3 percent in December. The numbers, released Wednesday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, are the lowest since May 2008. Total employment rose by 32,000 from December to January, according to the department, while the total number of unemployed declined by 20,000.

State unemployment up slightly, down compared to last year

Employment was flat this July yet ten thousand more Michiganders claimed to be unemployed last month. Analysts say that’s because more people were looking for jobs in July.
LANSING - Michigan's unemployment rate ticked up to 8.8 percent in July, marking the second consecutive monthly increase as more people entered the job market. The rate rose from 8.7 percent in June and 8.5 percent in May.

Unemployment rises with summer job hunt

The joblessness rate in May went up by as much as 0.9 percent in Kalamazoo and Hillsdale counties to only 0.2 percent in Allegan.
KALAMAZOO, MI - More people looking for work during the summer was more than the area job market - which grew -- could handle. That pushed the unemployment rate for the Kalamazoo-Portage area to 7.4 percent in May. "A significant number of individuals entered the job market seeking summer employment in May," wrote Leonidas Murembya in his latest analysis of Southwest Michigan.

Calhoun County jobless rate falls in March

The unemployment rate in Calhoun County has continued to drop, according to Michigan's Bureau of Labor Market Information. The monthly report for March, released Thursday said the county's jobless rate was 6.8 percent. That's down from 7.3 percent in February, 7.4 percent in January and 8.0 percent in March 2012.

Unemployment rate down in March for Kalamazoo labor market

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Three-hundred more jobs in the leisure and hospitality industries and 100 more in construction helped improve the unemployment rate in March in the Kalamazoo-Portage area, the state reported Thursday. One-hundred additional jobs were reported in government as well as in professional and business services, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.
