Unemployment rises with summer job hunt

KALAMAZOO, MI - More people looking for work during the summer was more than the area job market - which grew -- could handle. That pushed the unemployment rate for the Kalamazoo-Portage area to 7.4 percent in May. "A significant number of individuals entered the job market seeking summer employment in May," wrote Leonidas Murembya in his latest analysis of Southwest Michigan.

Calhoun County jobless rate falls in March

The unemployment rate in Calhoun County has continued to drop, according to Michigan's Bureau of Labor Market Information. The monthly report for March, released Thursday said the county's jobless rate was 6.8 percent. That's down from 7.3 percent in February, 7.4 percent in January and 8.0 percent in March 2012.

Unemployment rate down in March for Kalamazoo labor market

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Three-hundred more jobs in the leisure and hospitality industries and 100 more in construction helped improve the unemployment rate in March in the Kalamazoo-Portage area, the state reported Thursday. One-hundred additional jobs were reported in government as well as in professional and business services, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.

Seasonal education jobs help unemployment rate drop 0.1%

A regional analyst from the Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Relations & Strategic Initiatives says jobs in healthcare, construction, seasonal retail trade jobs, some social services, and leisure and hospitality all fell in February.
KALAMAZOO, MI - The unemployment rate for the Kalamazoo-Portage area remained almost unchanged in February vs. January, mirroring the experience of most other regions of the state. Jobless rates inched down in February in nine of the 12 regional counties tracked by the state.
