United Auto Workers Picks New President

Detroit Dennis Williams was overwhelming elected as the next United Auto Workers president by delegates at the UAW constitutional convention Wednesday. Williams, the unions secretary treasurer, handily defeated Gary Walkowicz, a longtime union worker from Fords Dearborn Truck Plant who has been outspoken about many of the UAWs policies and a perennial presidential challenger.

Auto union may increase dues

If approved, members of United Auto Workers will likely pay a half hour more of hourly pay per month.
The United Auto Workers is considering its first dues increase for members since 1967, according to union sources and memos posted on local union websites. UAW members currently contribute two hours of straight-time pay to the union each month.

UAW appeals right-to-work for state employees

The United Auto Workers union says only the Civil Service Commission can oversee their work policies. The right-to-work case will now be brought before the Michigan Supreme Court.
LANSING - A union says it will appeal a state Court of Appeals ruling that says Michigan's right-to-work law applies to state employees. The United Auto Workers notified its members of the planned appeal through an e-mailed newsletter. UAW Local 6000 is the largest union representing state employees, with about 17,000 members.
