U-M Professor says ban on Affirmative Action has "chilling effect"

As Kevin Gaines discussed the history of the civil rights movement in a University of Michigan class recently, he said he found himself looking at 15 white faces and two African-American faces. That lack of diversity made having robust class discussions difficult, Gaines, a U-M history professor, said Thursday during a conference call with reporters.

University of Michigan considering in-state tuition for undocumented students

The University of Michigan is expected to begin offering in-state tuition to undocumented students who can prove they graduated from a Michigan high school and attended at least some middle and high school in the state. The new policy, part of a sweeping overhaul of who is considered an in-state student, will be voted on Thursday by the university's Board of Regents.

University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman will retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year when her current contract runs out, she officially announced Thursday.
