KALAMAZOO, MI - Collin Altamirano couldn't stop grinning as he posed for photos, made a speech and accepted his place in USTA Boys 18 National Championship history. By defeating Jared Donaldson, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, in the best of five boys 18s finals match, Altamirano became the first unseeded player in the tournament's 71 years in Kalamazoo to win a singles title.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The USTA Boys 18-16 National Championships begin today at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium and Western Michigan University's Sorensen Tennis Complex, and will run through Aug. 11. Whether you're a newcomer to the tournament or have been attending for the 70 years it's been played in Kalamazoo, here are some things to keep in mind.

Former Checker Motors CEO dies

The former CEO of Checker Motors in Kalamazoo has reportedly died in Florida. David Markin was 81.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced Markin’s death in an e-mail message to its members today. He served as the USTA’s president in 1989 and 1990. The organization sponsors the boy's tennis championships held in Kalamazoo each summer.

Markin also served on the Kalamazoo College Board of Trustees for 18 years, beginning in 1973.
