West Nile Case Reported in Kent County

Patient has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A man in his 60s may be the first person in Kent County to get West Nile virus this summer, the health department reported Thursday, Sept. 11. Preliminary testing detected the virus. The Kent County Health Department is waiting for the Michigan Department of Community Health to confirm the diagnosis.

First West Nile Infected Mosquitoes Found in State

Two people in Michigan died in 2013 after being infected by West Nile Virus
SAGINAW, MI - Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus have been found in Saginaw County. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, tests conducted on Wednesday, July 2, confirmed the presence of the virus among mosquitoes collected in Saginaw County. The mosquitoes were collected in mid-June, according to health officials.

West Nile virus strikes Saint Joseph County

State health officials say they've confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in Michigan so far this year. The Department of Community Health in Lansing says the case involves a man in Saint Joseph County. It says eight birds from around the state have also tested positive for this virus that it is spread by mosquitoes.

West Nile infected more than 200 people in Michigan last year and 17 died of the disease that can lead to serious complications like meningitis and encephalitis.
