Abortion insurance rider petition could become law

LANSING - Anti-abortion activists have a "substantial" cushion of signatures needed to get a law on the books that would require insurance companies to offer abortion coverage only through a separate rider to a customer's policy.

Right to Life turns in anti-abortion petitions

A Michigan anti-abortion group says it has turned in more than 315,000 petition signatures. The Gongwer News Service says the initiative my Right to Life is aimed at preventing employers from offering abortion coverage in their health plans. Employees would be forced to by a rider to their policy at extra cost.

Supporters of the measure need 258,088 valid signatures to put the measure before lawmakers.
