For the past 20 years, volunteers and biologists have been listening at night. They try to hear the songs of 13 kinds of frogs and toads in Michigan. Aquatic wildlife projects in Barry and Berrien Counties are getting a boost from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR has awarded $200,000 to the City of Niles to remove a dam at Pucker Street on the Dowagiac River. It will also give just under $100,000 to the Barry Conservation District for creek habitat restoration.

The DNR says it received 58 applications for a total of a million dollars for aquatic habitat projects; it’s ended up splitting the money between eight of them.
