Lower turnout for Battle Creek city elections despite increase in registered voters

Fewer Battle Creek residents participated in this week's local election than in 2011, despite a slight increase in the number of registered voters. Only 9.9 percent of the city's 39,258 registered voters cast ballots on Tuesday for the next city commission, according to unofficial election numbers.

Baldwin won't seek another term as Battle Creek mayor

Susan Baldwin, who has served on the city commission for a decade and led the board for the past four years, won't seek another term as mayor. The 59-year-old told the Enquirer Wednesday that she has "enjoyed every minute as mayor" but wanted more flexibility as a commissioner to spend time with her family.

Two incumbents were ousted Tuesday as Battle Creek voters opted for a newcomer and a former representative to be on their next city commission. Ward 3 Commissioner Sherry Sofia, who regained her seat in 2011 after losing the previous election, was knocked off the commission again, this time by political newcomer Dean Newsome.
