A health study released today ranks Calhoun County near the bottom. Calhoun County placed 78th out of the 82 Michigan counties. Allegan County was ranked the healthiest in our area, at 11th. Most of the Southwest Michigan counties fell between 40th and 60th place. Kalamazoo came in 46th in the health study.

The 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests show the achievement gap in the state is widening. The average achievement gap is up two points from last year. The Battle Creek Enquirer reports some of the largest gaps were in schools with high proficiency overall.

A Japanese auto supplier might hire 400 new workers in Michigan. The Detroit Free Press reports that Denso could add manufacturing and engineering jobs at its Battle Creek and Southfield plants that make radiators and air conditioning units. The company will make the move if tax incentives are approved by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and by local governments. A spokesman from Denso International America says Michigan’s Right-to-Work law won’t affect the company’s choice.
