Zapata memorial highway bill approved

Interstate 94 in Kalamazoo County is just a step away from being renamed in honor of a public safety officer killed in the line of duty. State lawmakers have approved a bill to call the 25-mile stretch of freeway the "Officer Eric Zapata Memorial Highway".

Zapata was a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer who was killed while investigating reports of shots fired in the Edison neighborhood in April 2011.

Battle Creek Police Officer arraigned on drunk driving charges

A Battle Creek police officer was arraigned Tuesday on two misdemeanor charges after investigators alleged she was intoxicated while working. Jennifer Appl, 26, appeared before Calhoun County District Court Judge Holmes shortly after 9 a.m. Holmes told her she is charged with driving under the influence of liquor and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

A Battle Creek police officer was charged Monday with drunken driving and having a weapon while intoxicated. Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert said he issued the warrant after reviewing a report from the Michigan State Police involving Jennifer Appl, 26. Gilbert said the warrants allege that Appl was legally drunk when she reported for work at 10 p.m.

BC Commissioner seeks meeting on police issues

The FBI, the MIchigan Attorney General's Office, and the Michigan State Police have declined requests to look into allegations by City Commissioner Jeffrey Domenico.
A Battle Creek city commissioner who has alleged corruption and illegal activities in the police department is proposing a meeting next week. "I would like to put a lot of people at the table and hash this out," Commissioner Jeffrey Domenico said Monday. "Maybe there is no reason to escalate this further."

FBI says "no thanks" to BC police probe request

The state Attorney General's Office and MIchigan State Police officials have also declined requests to look into the issue.
The FBI isn't ready to investigate the Battle Creek Police Department, the city said Saturday. Following allegations by a city commissioner of poor management and illegal activities, Police Chief Jackie Hampton said Thursday he requested an investigation by the FBI of the department. But City Manager Ken Tsuchiyama confirmed Saturday that that agency has declined the request.
