Battle Creek City Commission approves anti-discrimination ordinance, raise for city manager

One commissioner votes against ordinance providing protection against discrimination for lesbian, gays, bisexual and transgender people
Despite a handful of residents who spoke out in opposition, Battle Creek City Commissioners voted 6-3 to grant City Manager Ken Tsuchiyama a 2 percent raise Tuesday night. The move increases Tsuchiyama's annual salary to $124,950 from $122,500. Vice Mayor Elizabeth Fulton and commissioners Jeff Domenico and Dave Walters cast the dissenting votes.

"We have the same scenario that everyone does with the stock market," said Calhoun County Administrator Kelli Scott.

BC commissioners to vote on anti-discrimination ordinance

Lynette Rich spoke with certainty and strength until the end, when she said young people in Battle Creek who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender need protections. "And they need our support," she said, her voice cracking as she gestured toward ordinance supporters in the crowd. "My friends."

Bike rentals offered in downtown Battle Creek

The Battle Creek Community Foundation and bike shop TeamActive are sponsoring the project.
Starting next week, Battle Creek will offer bicycle rentals to anybody. All that's needed is a credit card and a working pair of legs. In front of Burnham Brook Community Center at 200 W. Michigan Ave. is a B-cycle station. Four bikes and one adult-sized tricycle can be rented by anyone in the community.
