Power outage Sunday in downtown Kalamazoo blamed on squirrel

KALAMAZOO, MI -- All power has been restored in downtown Kalamazoo, a Consumers Energy spokesperson said. At its peak, the outage left 2,094 customers and numerous businesses without power. Traffic lights on West Michigan Avenue and some parking structures in the surrounding area were not working. Gas stations were closed temporarily for the outage.

Consumers Energy customers get a rate hike and refunds

Consumers Energy customers will soon see slightly bigger electric bills. The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved an $89 million rate increase, 40 percent less than originally sought by the utility.

The commission says that means a typical residential customer will see an increase of about a $1.67 per month. Consumers Energy had initially asked for a rate increase of $148 million.

Thousands of power outages across Michigan

WEST MICHIGAN -- Hundreds of West Michigan residents are without power this morning after another winter storm whipped through the area Tuesday night. Consumers Energy reports there are 224 customers without power in Allegan County and nearly 200 in Kent County before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
