While apartment prices in the Kalamazoo area are low compared to bigger cities like Grand Rapids, most buildings are outside the city’s core. Downtown is a different story. Apartments are in short supply, and rents can be two or three times more expensive. But one developer is trying to make things affordable by going small.

The City of Kalamazoo understood in the 1950s that suburbanization could hollow out the downtown. So it embraced plans to remake the area as a kind of giant, open-air shopping mall.

Internationally-known architect Victor Gruen created the blueprint. The design called for a series of pedestrian malls downtown, including one on Michigan Avenue. The walking areas would have been surrounded by a ring road and vast parking lots.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Funeral services for longtime Kalamazoo restaurant owner Pete Stamos are scheduled for Monday. Stamos, who owned and operated a variety of businesses, including restaurants, bars, a wholesale meat company and a food delivery service over many years, died Wednesday (May 6) at his home at age 79. He has been ill for quite some time. (Kalamazoo Gazette)

KALAMAZOO, MI – Bronson Healthcare Group has purchased and will redevelop the former Kalamazoo Gazette newspaper building and an adjacent building in downtown Kalamazoo. The healthcare system closed the deal April 24 to buy the three-story, 131,419-square-foot former newspaper building, the one-story, 5,200-square-foot former Business Review West Michigan magazine building, and an adjacent parking lot.
