The "Fight Crime: Invest in Kids" coalition says Michigan could save more than $200 million a year and keep thousands of people out of prison through a proposed federal-state early childhood education initiative.

Michigan's education budget for the next fiscal year includes a major increase in funding for state-funded pre-school. 

Governor Rick Snyder's proposed budget calls for an additional $65-million for the Great Start readiness program. The House budget only includes $38-million

Coordinator of Calhoun County Great Start Collaborative says report will help focus their work.

The program is currently run by Kalamazoo County's Health and Human Services Department.
