Census figures show income holding in Michigan

Household median income in state was virtually unchanged at $46,859 in 2012
Michigan's economy is showing signs of recovery, with median incomes holding steady after years of decline, but the number of people in poverty has stagnated, new Census data released today show. For the state, it marked the first time since 2007 that incomes didn't drop significantly, though they remain well below pre-recession levels.

Michigan unemployment rate rises for third straight month

Jobless rate hits 9% but payroll jobs grew by 8,000 in August
LANSING - Michigan's unemployment rate rose for the third consecutive month to 9 percent in August, the highest recorded in 2013. The rate rose from 8.8 percent in July. Still, the August unemployment rate was down from 9.3 percent in the same month last year, according to data released Wednesday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.

Report finds business activity flat in Southwest Michigan during August

Economist Brian Long says slightly lower numbers are "not cause for concern"

"Basically in Kalamazoo we're back to pretty much flat," Brian Long said of economic growth. "That is largely because of some anecdotal things that have happened.

Michigander buying power erodes

Some suggest that an increase in the minimum wage would help turn the situation around. Others say that would lead to job losses.
LANSING - Median wage earners in Michigan have less purchasing power than they did 30 years ago, with black workers bearing the brunt of the decline. After adjusting for inflation, Michigan's median wage actually dropped since 1982 while wages for earners in the top 10 percent grew, according to the Michigan League for Public Policy's annual Labor Day report.

Michigan Senate passes Medicaid expansion

The State Senate narrowly approved expansion of Medicaid coverage Tuesday. The Gongwer News Service says the final vote of 20-to-18 followed a one-vote rejection of the plan earlier in the day.
