Grounded in eclecticism, Gene Knific debuts at Fontana Summer Festival

Gene Knific comes by his mixed pedigree of classical and jazz influences honestly.

The son of violinist Renata Knific ( professor, Western Michigan University) and bassist Tom Knific (professor, chair of Jazz Studies, Western Michigan University), this eclectic young composer and pianist, with his trio, were invited to perform for the Fontana Summer Festival this weekend.

Cara Lieurance talks to David Baldwin, executive director of Fontana, who shares details and musical selections from the upcoming Fontana Summer Festival, featuring Gene Knific, Ralph and Albertine Votapek, Paul Nitsch, Axiom Brass, the Calidore String Quartet, and the Hot Club of Detroit.

He also spotlights a collaborative Fontana venture with the City of Kalamazoo and the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, which will present jazz in Bronson Park on the third Thursdays of June, July and August.

New season, new director, new Fontana

The 2014-2015 Fall/Winter season of Fontana will feature eight concerts between September 2014 and April 2015. 

Artist director David Baldwin and Cara Lieurance look at the variety of music and musicians, from renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson, to the legendary Marsalis family, to the centuries-old Vienna Boys Choir, who will appear in Kalamazoo as Fontana's guests next season.

Bassist Edgar Meyer reflects on groundbreaking career

Bassist Edgar Meyer recently gave a solo concert in Kalamazoo to open the Fontana Chamber Arts season. 

Mr. Meyer and Fontana director David Baldwin sat down with Cara Lieurance before the concert and discussed his career, his approach to bass playing, and his work as a composer. He credits his association with such various artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Joshua Bell to the simple fact that, in his words, "I can write."
